Ninth Annual Michigan Scale Collectors Get Together

Good company and unlimited scale talk was all the incentive nineteen collectors needed to gather at the home of Utz and Shirley Schmidt on October 7, 2006.  The beautiful setting on the shore of Lake Huron, the gorgeous sunny autumn day, a spread of delicious home cooked foodstuff, a superb collection of scales and the treasures untold residing in the pole barn were only added enticements to bring this group of Michigan scale collectors together for their ninth annual reunion.

The Michigan group welcomed collectors from Minnesota, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Texas and Toronto, Canada.  Informal was the order of the day and relax was the code word.  After touring the pole barn and viewing the collection, the crowd broke into small groups for conversations ranging from scales on eBay to general chit-chat. Bob Jibben, Peter Laycock and Jan Berning all brought from their personal collections a different example of the See-Saw Letter Scale.  Since each scale was hand made, each one is unique.

Les Firth presented his newest pride and joy, a wall mounted Simpson scale with double brass beams. Searches of car trunks yielded other showpieces for everyone to look at and admire.
Convention committee members Utz and Shirley Schmidt and Greg Moss reviewed the plans for the upcoming convention in Dearborn.  This group has put forth a lot of hard work to ensure a great convention.  Everyone was invited to attend and urged to encourage other members to join us.  The decision was made to hold the “Tenth Annual Michigan Scale Collectors Get Together” next year at the home of Jack Mickevich and Cass Schorsch in Scottville, Michigan.

Utz and Shirley proved to be gracious hosts and the day passed quickly and all too soon was over.  After much shuffling of positions to get the perfect placement so all could be seen the group photo was taken.   Then everyone went their separate ways with good memories to keep.

Those attending were Utz and Shirley Schmidt, Ben and Mary Smith, Ray and Donna Doyscher, Les and Elaine Firth, Bill and Jan Berning, Peter and Dian Laycock, Bob and Carol Hayden, Jack Mickevich and Cass Schorsch, Jim Dietrich, Greg Moss and Bob Jibben.
